Stroke rates in people younger than 40 yrs age group have increased in last 2 decades. As per Indian statistics proportion of stroke in younger age group is 15 - 30%, out of these approximately 50% are Ischemic, rest are haemorrhagic strokes – Intracerebral or subarachnoid.
It is due to greater awareness of stroke, better detection (MRI – DWI scans), more accurate diagnosis, increase in vascular risk factors (premature atherosclerosis), illicit drug use, Oral contraceptive medication (OCPs) use in women, increase in autoimmune disorders, among other factors.
PFO is an abnormal communication between the upper two chambers (Atria) of the heart, which should have closed in a normal heart. Paradoxical embolism secondary to PFO is an important cause of cryptogenic stroke. Incidence of PFO in General Population is approx. - 25 % versus those with Cryptogenic Stroke is 40 %. Management is Complex and requires an Interdisciplinary team approach.
One of its kind in the city of Mumbai . Very few in the country. Multidisciplinary team approach to manage the patient: Detailed clinical assessment, appropriate stroke work up for the young, specialised tests like 2D Echo, Transthoracic Echo (TEE), among others.
