Ageing Skin

Overview

Ageing skin is characterised by a loss of elasticity, volume, and moisture. This process may lead to visible changes in skin texture and appearance over time.

There are two main types of skin ageing:

  • Intrinsic ageing: Natural ageing that causes thinner, drier skin, fine lines, and a gradual decline in skin quality.
  • Extrinsic ageing: Caused by environmental factors like pollution, poor diet, smoking, and sun exposure, this type of ageing results in coarse wrinkles, reduced elasticity, skin laxity, and a rougher skin texture.

Ageing skin commonly shows the following signs:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sagging skin
  • Dryness
  • Age spots or uneven pigmentation

Several factors contribute to skin ageing, including:

  • Natural ageing process
  • Prolonged sun exposure (UV damage)
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor diet, stress, and lack of sleep.

A dermatologist can carry out a comprehensive skin assessment to determine the extent of ageing and recommend the most suitable treatment.

Multiple treatments can help restore a youthful appearance, depending on the cause and severity of the condition; these include:

  • Dermal fillers
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy
  • Morpheus8 (microneedling with radiofrequency)
  • Thread lift
  • Hydrating and anti-ageing skincare products

You should consult a dermatologist if:

  • Skin changes appear earlier than expected
  • Sudden pigmentation changes, persistent dryness, or rapid sagging
  • Home care does not provide visible improvement, and you wish to explore medical anti-ageing options
