Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre boasts state-of-the-art technology and specialized infrastructure that empowers our Rehabilitation team to provide comprehensive treatment programs with unparalleled efficacy. Notably, our facility features an advanced gait and motion analysis laboratory, which is equipped with 13 high-resolution cameras. These cameras facilitate detailed movement analysis assessments, complemented by our 8-channel DTS Electromyography (EMG) system. This cutting-edge setup affords us a clear and precise understanding of each joint's movement, enabling accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment for a wide array of neurological, orthopaedic, and paediatric conditions.

Our facility features an industry-leading robotic system that aids in restoring both upper limb and lower limb function for patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation.

Furthermore, we have a dedicated unweighing system that supports patients in their recovery from strokes and other neurological conditions, assisting them in walking with appropriate assistance. Our computerized balance assessment and training system contribute to achieving functional independence in patients. The utilization of our distinctive underwater treadmill, a form of aquatic therapy, helps alleviate joint stress, reduce pain in orthopaedic conditions, and aid in mobilization.

In addition to these advanced technologies, we offer a wide array of other electrotherapeutic modalities that serve as valuable adjuncts to our customized rehabilitation programs, aiding in pain reduction and the attainment of functional independence.

Exercises also reduce perception of fatigue which is a major concern related to cancer therapy. In addition, regular exercises improve effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy.

What does the program consist of?
    1. Physical therapy exercises
    2. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
    3. Speech therapy
    4. Yoga
    5. Nutrition
    1. Physical Therapy Exercises

They are divided in 3 parts

  • Cancer specific exercises
  • Aerobic exercises
  • Strength training

Cancer specific exercises are focused on the area/ body part which is affected by cancer with an aim to relieve pain, improve mobility and build up strength.

Aerobic exercises like walking on the treadmill, cycling or cross trainer are prescribed after assessing your baseline capacity. They help in maintaining or improving your capacity further and reduce fatigue levels.

Strength training to build up strength and endurance of various muscle groups of your body. This is done using weight cuffs, dumbbells, elastic thera-bands and pneumatic machines.

    1. Exercises for lymphedema or manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

Exercises to prevent or drain lymphedema are specific set of exercises which are necessary for the patients who have developed or are at risk of developing swelling in arm or leg after surgery or radiation. In case of excessive swelling, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is given as needed with or without the use of special machines like Lympha-tron or Deep Oscillation Unit.

    1. Speech Therapy

Swallowing & Speech problems can occur after cancerous sections of the mouth, throat or larynx (voice box) are surgically removed and during/after radiation therapy.

Assessment and diagnosis of speech / swallowing problems can be done using various objective and subjective methods (e.g. FEES-fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, Acoustic Analysis of voice) by a therapist.

If the individual requires treatment, the speech-language & swallowing therapist can work with him / her to improve these functions.

Therapy may include:
  • Muscle exercises
  • Compensatory strategies
  • Head postures
  • Designing a safe diet
  • Safe swallow techniques
  • Voice restoration post laryngectomy

Early intervention can prevent late effects of radiation on speech / swallowing functions.

    1. Yoga

Cancer and its treatment are associated with a high degree of stress, anxiety and depression. Yoga, in the form of breathing exercises, meditation and aasanas, provides relaxation and also improves mental and spiritual wellbeing.

    1. Nutrition

Our team of dieticians will help you with a diet plan and all your queries pertaining to diet.

How frequently should I visit?

You will need to visit the hospital at least 3-4 days a week for therapy, which will be tailor-made for individual patient.

  • Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders: Difficulty in Speech- Swallowing due to facial& laryngeal muscle weakness

Therapy usually entails individual therapy training, multi modality stimulation and education to help an individual overcome or compensate for any of their difficulties. Specialized Voice Treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological impairments is also done.

    1. Voice Clinic:

At our specialized voice clinic, patients with voice complaints like harsh/breathy voice, strained voice, and reduced loudness/pitch range are evaluated and treated with state of art technology.
Voice therapy also helps professional voice users (singers, teachers and actors) to meet their vocal demands and prevent voice disorders.
Our therapist work closely with the ENT specialist to holistically assess patient voice., using Laryngoscopy, Stroboscopy and Acoustic analysis software.
Therapy includes various exercise protocols, voice training and education on voice care and lifestyle modification to improve patient’s voice quality.

    1. Oncology Rehabilitation

Most patients with head and neck cancer have difficulty with Speech and/or Swallowing which may be temporary or permanent in nature.

  • Rehabilitation during and post-radiation treatment (focused on speech, voice and swallowing).
  • Post-laryngectomy voice restoration: Tracheosesophageal voice, Artificial larynx and Esophageal speech.
  • Post Glossectomy articulation and swallowing rehabilitation.
  • Swallowing evaluation and treatment to prevent aspiration & facilitate oral food intake.
  • Family education and counseling.

A multi disciplinary team approach involving Oncosurgeon, Radiation oncologist, ENT specialist, Dietician and Physical therapists, is used to deliver best care to patients.

    1. Stuttering Therapy:

Stuttering affects the fluency of speech. It begins during childhood and, in some cases, lasts throughout life. The program includes breathing exercises, fluency shaping strategies and counseling to bring about behavioral changes needed to achieve improvement that will be generalized into daily living. Devices like Delayed Auditory feedback are also used to facilitate fluent speech production. Group therapy and Support group for Stammering are conducted to assist in generalization of therapy.

    1. Swallowing Rehabilitation:

Swallowing disorder also called as dysphagia is difficulty in eating food. This can occur in patients with stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s, head-neck cancer etc. It can also occur in children with cleft palate, oral sensory disorder, cerebral palsy etc.
At Sir H.N. Reliance Hospital state of the art assessment procedures like Video fluoroscopic swallowing evaluation (Modified barium Swallow) and Fiber optic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) are used to diagnose swallowing disorders.
Swallowing therapy includes exercises to improve muscle movement, positions or strategies to help the individual swallow more effectively and diet modification to ensure safe swallow. Electrical stimulation to stimulate muscle activity necessary for phonation/swallowing is also used.
