Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Overview

Commonly referred to as the “Vampire Facial”, platelet-rich plasma injections are highly popular in Hollywood. This regenerative therapy is performed using the patient's own blood. Presently, it is the most popular anti-ageing treatment. Platelet-rich plasma injections are commonly used by dentists and orthopaedics to aid in early recovery. Recently, this method has been applied to skincare, and it is used to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks as well as rejuvenate the under-eye skin. It also helps plump facial contours. Presently, it is the most popular natural anti-ageing treatment

This procedure has been used to:

  • Improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks
  • Rejuvenate the under-eye skin
  • Enhance facial contours

Platelets, which are a type of blood cells, play an essential role in wound healing and tissue regeneration. PRP is extracted from the patient’s blood and injected or applied to the targeted areas. This stimulates collagen production and accelerates tissue repair.

The procedure typically takes 45–60 minutes, including steps like blood draw, preparation, and application of PRP

Preparation for this procedure usually involves:

  • Blood draw to obtain the sample for PRP preparation
  • Avoiding blood-thinning medications prior to the session
  • Drinking adequate water to ease blood draw
  • Discussing any medical conditions or medications with the dermatologists

As the procedure uses the patient’s own blood, risks are minimal. Possible side effects include:

  • Mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site
  • Temporary tenderness or discomfort
  • Rare infection if proper hygiene is not maintained

  • Avoid heavy exercise and direct sun exposure for 24-48 hours.
  • Apply recommended soothing creams or serums
  • Follow up with their dermatologist for assessment and planning of additional sessions

Results develop gradually over several weeks and may require multiple sessions for optimal outcomes.
