Wrinkles

Overview

Wrinkles are deeper creases or folds that develop when fine lines progress overtime. They are a natural part of ageing but their development can also be accelerated by lifestyle and environmental factors

Wrinkles can be classified into two categories:

  • Fine lines are small, shallow lines that appear on the surface of the skin.
  • Deep wrinkles are more pronounced creases that extend deeper into the skin and are harder to smooth out.

Wrinkles typically present as lines and folds of varying depths on the face, neck, and hands.

The main causes of wrinkles include:

  • Natural ageing
  • Sun exposure and UV damage
  • Smoking
  • Repeated facial expression (such as frowning or squinting)

A dermatologist can diagnose wrinkles with simple visual examination and assess their severity.

Treatment depends on the depth and location of wrinkles and may include:

  • Botox to relax dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement
  • Fillers to restore volume and smooth deep creases
  • Chemical peels to resurface
  • Laser resurfacing (Clear + Brilliant) based on severity of the condition.

Consult a dermatologist if:

  • Wrinkles are becoming more prominent or bothersome
  • Non-prescription skincare is not effective
  • You are considering cosmetic treatment options

You can reduce the risk or slow the progression of wrinkles by:

  • Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily
  • Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption
  • Staying hydrated and eating a nutrient-rich diet
  • Using skincare with retinoids and antioxidants
  • Maintaining a consistent skincare routine

A dermatologist or cosmetic dermatologist is the right specialist to assess and recommend personalised wrinkle treatments.
