Hypertension or high blood pressure (BP) is a common health condition among many today. It usually does not cause noticeable symptoms, yet a major reason behind a host of conditions that can also turn fatal, said health experts stressing the need for making lifestyle modifications to manage the condition.
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition characterised by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure is a measure of the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it throughout the body. It is usually expressed as two values: systolic pressure over diastolic pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg).
"The brain continuously depends on nourishment from blood supply to it to work properly. Hypertension can quietly damage our arteries (blood vessels) for years before a person develops symptoms," Dr. Manish Chhabria, Consultant Neurologist at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, told IANS
