Dr. Rasik S. Shah is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the Paediatric Surgery department of Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.
After his MBBS, he obtained his training as a general surgeon from the department of surgery, Grant Medical College and Sir J J group of Hospitals. Thereafter, he joined the Paediatric Surgery M. Ch. training course in 1989 at the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Sir J J Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College. He was awarded the prestigious “Dr. (Ms) Banoo Khambatta Memorial Award” for securing highest average points in M. Ch. examination held by University of Mumbai in 1991. He continued as a Lecturer in the same department till August 1995.
Dr Shah successfully completed USMLE and joined as a Clinical Fellow in the department of Paediatric Surgery at University of Tennessee in November 1995. During fellowship, he had an opportunity to obtain training from Dr. Thom Lobe, the world-renowned laparoscopic paediatric surgeon at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Centre, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. In addition, he also got an opportunity to obtain training in the field of solid tumours from world pioneer in the field of paediatric oncosurgery from Dr. Bhaskar Rao at St Jude Cancer Hospital for Children in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
He returned to India in 1998 and since then practices in Mumbai, India. He is one of the first paediatric surgeons, instrumental in starting basic and advanced laparoscopic paediatric surgery in India in 1998. He has the credit of performing the first laparoscopic surgery in children for many paediatric surgical conditions. He has successfully trained many paediatric surgeons in the art of minimally invasive surgery.
Dr Shah has been invited for demonstrations in many live operative national and international workshops and to deliver guest lectures totalling more than 85. He and his associates have read more than 102 papers and presented 29 videos in scientific national and international conferences. He has authored 45 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also authored 4 book chapters. He is the editor of Journal of Minimal Access Surgery since 2005. He is the editor of the first edition of book “Paediatric Endosurgery” published by the Paediatric Surgery Department of the B. Y. L. Nair hospital, Mumbai, 2001.
Dr Shah has organised many hands-on teaching programs to teach art of laparoscopic and thoracoscopic paediatric surgery. He has been ex-faculty for training courses organised at “Methodist Institute of Education and Research”, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, and Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education, Mumbai, India. At present, he is the convener of Minimal Access Paediatric Surgery Teaching program at CEMAST, Mumbai. He has at present 34 educative videos in his (Rasik Shah) YouTube channel.
Dr Shah is a member (since 1990) and served as the honorary secretary-cum-treasurer (2009-11), vice president (2013) and president (2014) of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeon. He is the founder member of Maharashtra Chapter of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeon. Dr. Rasik Shah is the founder member (since 2005) and served as the honorary secretary (2007-09), Vice Chairman (2009-11) and Chairman (2011-13) of Paediatric Endoscopic Surgeons-India section of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeon.
In addition, he has been associated with administration of many social organisations including Lions Club of Churchgate, Jain Doctors’ Federation (Mumbai) and Shree Vagad Graduates Association. In these organisations he has served at various levels including the post of president. He is president of “Om Shanti Churchgate Lions JDF Mumbai Medical Centre Trust” located at Chinchpokli, Mumbai.
He has participated in more than 15 paediatric surgical camps at Bhachau & Bidda, Kutch, Gujarat and Shirdi, Maharashtra.
